DANIELLE Tooley and Lara Munro started the Anzac Day clash with Millicent at McLaughlin Park on fire and the Cats looked primed for a real crack at the 2025 runner-up.

Tooley nailed eight straight and Munro, eight from nine and Casterton Sandford had a five-goal lead at the first change.

Isobel Cleary was connecting well with her goaling partners and at the other end of the court, the Saints were a little shaky and the pressure over the shot was reaping rewards for Chloe Finnigan and Holly Smith.

But if you challenge the Saints early, you can be sure they will react and react they did. Demi Verbena started to take complete control of the Millicent frontline and her 11 straight for the quarter sent a clear signal to the Cats.

At the other end of the court, young defensive duo Emily Denton and Asha Gysbers started to deny time and space for the Cats’ shooting duo, limiting supply and seeing Millicent enter the half time break three goals clear.

Through the speed of Piper Paul in the mid court and the improved defensive effort from the Saints in the third, Millicent looked likely to take complete control of the contest, with Kalani Dunn also finding more ball at Goal Shooter and the move of Bell Coghlan to Centre and Lisa Duldig to Wing Defence also reaping rewards.

But while the weight of possession was with the home side, the Cats’ accurate finishing ensured they were still well in the hunt.

Tooley and Munro combined for a perfect nine from nine and heading into the last it was Millicent with a six-goal advantage.

The final quarter was dominated by both sides’ defensive efforts right across the court.

Neither side could find any free-flowing connection and in the end, the 10 from 11 from Dunn and Verbena ensured Millicent took the points, with Tooley and Munro having their least productive output for the quarter due to both supply and finishing.

Munro and Clearly, who was the key feeder for the Cats, were named best for Casterton Sandford, while Verbena and Paul were best for the Saints.
